Is European Defense So Important That Europe Shouldn’t Spend on It?

That is the implication of some of the outrage over President Trump banging on the Europeans to spend more on defense. Trump’s tactics and rhetoric are never subtle, but the fact is that only three European countries spent 2 percent of GDP on defense last year. The major continental power, Germany, is spending 1.24 percent, and because it takes NATO so seriously, promises to go all the way up to 1.5 percent . . . by 2024. NATO is an important institution of the West, and we should all defend it as such, but Europeans can show their commitment by spending a minimal amount on defense. Jerry Hendrix has a good piece on the home page on all this.
