For the first time since the establishment of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) nearly 25 years ago, a U.S. Navy flag officer has assumed command of CENTCOM, a unified combatant command responsible for U.S. military operations inside 27 nations, including Iraq and Afghanistan. In its history, CENTCOM has been commanded by five Army and four Marine generals, including Marine Gen. Paul X. Kelley who commanded CENTCOM when it was officially known as the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force prior to 1983. Yesterday, four-star Admiral William J. Fallon, a 62-year-old Naval aviator, assumed command of CENTCOM from outgoing commander U.S. Army General John P. Abizaid. More about Admiral Fallon here.
