Nazis Once More

A reader of ours wanted me to know about the latest episode of Family Guy. Nazis, walking around in their uniforms, are wearing McCain-Palin buttons. (Check it out here.) Now, every Republican — or anti-socialist — is used to being called a Nazi — or National Socialist. But you never quite get used to it, do you? Even after years, it’s hard to get completely used to . . .

P.S. Republicans with tattoos on their arms have been called Nazis (and when I say tattoos, I don’t mean anchors, hearts, and eagles).

P.P.S. Colin Powell is concerned about the tone of this campaign — that’s one of the things that allegedly drove him to Obama. (He “came” to Obama, as they said back in the primaries.) I wonder if he watches Family Guy . . .

P.P.P.S. Back in ’64, CBS News announced that Barry Goldwater was linking up with holdover Nazis in Bavaria, in a kind of concerted campaign. The people at NR — among other conservatives — were mighty ticked about that. The magazine talked about it for years. I wonder if the charge of Nazism is now so routine — we don’t even stir.

P.P.P.P.S. The guy who did that, at CBS, was Daniel Schorr. He’s still working. For NPR, of course.
