The Obama administration has no excuse for being caught off-guard by the growing threat of the Islamic State abroad and in the United States, according NBC News’s chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel. The organization’s objectives and growth has been known long before the recent developments, he said.
“This has been going on for over three years,” he said on MSNBC on Wednesday afternoon. “The build up of ISIS has not been rapid — it was has been quite slow, it has been quite well-documented.”
Engel pointed to several news organizations that have done reports on the “incredibly ambitious” group’s recruitment and growth in recent years, including his own reports of recruits heading into Syria to fight.
“That we have no strategy to deal with ISIS is quite ridiculous at this stage,” he concluded.
