New Balance

I thought Rich’s column on the Virginia Tech shooting hit the nail on the head. Now WSJ gives us “Bedlam Revisited,” an excellent column that expands on the link between the Virginia Tech disaster and psychiatric deinstitutionalization. I actually think there’s reason to hope that, unlike previous shootings, some good may come of this one. It looks as though the country just may begin to follow Rich’s advice and rebalance our approach to hospitalization for mental illness. I hope so. But it should be a rebalancing, not a wholesale return to the past.
