New Cardinals

In about four hours, Pope Benedict XVI is expected to name about 20 new cardinals. The top contenders in advance reports are Italians Amato, Piacenza, Baldelli, Ravasi, Monterisi, Sardi, De Paolis, Sgreccia, Betori, and Romeo; Americans Raymond Burke (a favorite of U.S. conservatives) and Donald Wuerl; Marx of Germany; Koch of Switzerland; Nycz of Poland; Ranjith of Sri Lanka; and Collins of Canada. My own dark-horse American candidates are Timothy Dolan of New York (who has won the heart of the city in record time) and Charles Chaput of Denver (a very impressive intellectual in a fast-growing Catholic diocese).
