Newsweek’s Sketchy Polls

For  years Newsweek has regularly produced crazy outlier polls that get a lot of attention but seem almost worthless. This week they had another, as Jim Geraghty demonstrates to great effect. At this point, I really do wonder whether it’s simply a deliberate marketing strategy: Put out an attention-grabbing poll that gets everyone saying “Newsweek” on TV and elsewhere for a few days. Maybe they just don’t care about accuracy, or maybe they rig it to be inaccurate, or maybe they unintentionally rig the filters of the poll to conform to and then confirm their worldview. Whatever the explanation, it’s just been going on for too long to be a coincidence.
