Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of NIH’s Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, suggested that Americans’ fears about the disease are blown out of proportion and are often based on ignorance of how it is spread.

“Right now we’ve got a devastating epidemic in West Africa, and we’ve got an epidemic of fear in the United States,” he told Charlie Rose on Face the Nation Sunday.

Dr. Fauci believes that automatically quarantining health-care workers returning from Ebola-stricken countries is bad policy.

“We’ve got to continue to try to educate people about what they need to or do not need to be afraid of,” he said.

“You have to come into direct contact with bodily fluids,” he reiterated, and cannot contract Ebola from someone who is carrying it but does not yet have symptoms.
