The Wall Street Journal is out with a report about a revisionist historian claiming that the deep state plotted against former President Nixon. Today on The Editors, Rich asks Phil what he makes of it.
“Nixon peaked in 1948 during the [Hiss-Chambers] hearings . . . and then afterward in his presidency, it was awful,” says Phil. “Luckily, we’re fortunate that Ronald Reagan became president and was able to reverse it.
“His economic policies were catastrophic . . . it cost Republicans a massive number of seats in 1974,” explains Phil. “There is this sort of idea, just because of what happened to Trump that, well, it’s the same thing. It’s the same deep state that got Nixon.
“Let’s not try to whitewash what Nixon actually was. But I think that there is an effort by JD Vance and his supporters to rewrite history because it’s a more comfortable bridge from Nixon to Vance than it would be from Reagan to Vance, because Vance rejects Reaganism.”
