No Enemies?

From a reader:

I appreciate Sen. Lamar’s warning to President Obama about the need for bipartisanship but his closing comment about Lincoln reveals a serious lack of cognizance on Lincoln’s and Lamar’s part.

The British writer Edward Dicey was once introduced to President Lincoln as “one of his enemies.”

“I did not know I had any enemies,” was Lincoln’s answer; and Dicey later wrote, “I can still feel, as I write, the grip of that great boney hand held out to me in token of friendship.”

“Didn’t know he had any enemies”? What’s he talking about? Almost half the country went up in rebellion at the very fact of his election to the Presidency.

Lincoln had some really great thoughts and personal exchanges but that was not one of them.
