No Laughing Matter

I loved Stephen Colbert’s recent military episode. I’ve been known to laugh at his jokes on occasion. But the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law hearing this morning has been embarrassing, Colbert’s testimony was schtick (“This is America. I don’t want a tomato picked by a Mexican.”). This was a shameful move by a committee chairman, actively making a joke of her committee (Zoe Lofgren invited Colbert to testify). But it’s not that out of character for this Congress, which long ago seemed to lose sight of who it is accountable to. If Rep. Lofgren was working to keep congressional approval ratings in the gutter: Job well done!

UPDATE: And it only got worse from there …
