I heard the police chief on NPR this afternoon. I thought he made a pretty good case on a lot of points. One place where he really buttered it though was when he complained that all of the attention was on a tiny number of cowards (his word) who deserted the force. “What about the 1,200 who stayed on?” he asked (quoting from memory). Presumably he’s offering a rosy number, but let’s take it at face value. I’m sure there were some very brave cops on the New Orleans force of 1,500 officers, but by his own numbers 20% of the force up and quit. Whatever their reasons, that’s far from “tiny.” If a politician proposed cutting the police force by 20% few would call that a “tiny” number.
