At a hearing yesterday, DHS Secretary Napolitano apparently was scandalized when told that her agency conducted a raid Tuesday on a workplace where one-third of the staff were illegal aliens and has ordered a review, telling the congressmen, “I want to get to the bottom of this as well.” Obviously, she won’t let that happen again. But my headline probably isn’t entirely fair — before the Bush Administration saw the political need to allow immigration authorities to do their jobs, their cabinet secretaries behaved the same way. I testified at a Senate hearing in October 2005 the first panel of which included DHS head Michael Chertoff and Labor Secretary Chao, and when confronted by Durbin and Kennedy about an immigration sting, they groveled even worse than Napolitano. The sting, premised on a fake OSHA meeting, netted 48 illegal aliens working at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, N.C. Despite that, Chao said she was “very concerned” and Chertoff said “I think that was a bad idea, and I directed it not to happen again.” What he should have said was “Senator, I was unaware of that particular operation, but I when I return to my office I will get to the bottom of it, find out who ordered it, and give him a medal.”
