No Thank You

Jonathan Cohn says we should “thank Uncle Sam” that more people are getting health insurance. The number of people with private coverage, not supplied by the government, has kept dropping, and he concludes that only the expansion of Medicaid has kept the total number of people without insurance from rising. But that conclusion assumes that the expansion of governmental coverage has not played a role in the reduction in private coverage. To the extent that there is “crowd out,” the government’s record looks better than it is.
