I agree entirely with Rich on this. Imagine how stupid it would sound if Bush had said “nobody messes with Dick” about his V.P.? Nobody “messed” with Cheney — whatever “mess” means — because he was a really powerful and serious guy. You say “nobody messes with X” the way Obama did last night, when it is eminently clear that X is sort of a joke.
