My New York Post column today deals with the Obama/Holder administration’s breathtaking power grab in its abandonment of the Defense of Marriage Act. It now claims to be, absurdly, all three branches of government when it comes to the laws of the United States: judge, jury, and executioner, as it were.
Not only does this development speak volumes about the fundamentally dishonest campaign Obama ran in 2008, it also tells me that he knows he’s in trouble for 2012:
Forget last month’s media-fueled blather about an imaginary “pivot to the center.” Barack Obama is running, hard, as a flat-out progressive, for a second term as president of the United States, and he needs to shore up his hard-left base.
As is now evident, Obama’s previous “opposition” to gay marriage during his Senate run in 2004 and his presidential run was a calculated ruse to defuse social-conservative opposition — for even then, he was quietly signaling that this day would come when the political moment was right. As he wrote in “The Audacity of Hope,” he was “open to the possibility that my unwillingness to support gay marriage is misguided,” and that he had been “infected with society’s prejudices.”
This is a president who makes Tricky Dick Nixon look spontaneous and transparent.
But does he care? Or is he going pedal to the metal to effect his vision of “fundamental transformation” before the voters throw him out?
