Not Over Yet

Today’s WaPo story on immigration reflects the conventional wisdom that the bill will pass the Senate this week. Well, maybe, but I understand there’s going to be a vote on cloture (ending debate and proceeding to vote on the bill itself) and cloture can be blocked by only 41 Senators. Since 33 Senators voted to strip the amnesty out of the bill and 10 more voted to delay the amnesty provisions until enforcement efforts were successful, there are enough potential votes to prevent cloture — especially since it’s now not just the amnesty-for-illegal-aliens bill but the amnesty-for-illegal-aliens-and-then-GIVE-THEM-SOCIAL-SECURITY bill.
