NPR Serves Up a Liberal Scarcity Menu for Thanksgiving

Turkey Day may be over, but I’m still seeing examples of how the Left tried to promote its idea of a “woke” Thanksgiving. Some commentators urged everyone to open their holiday meal with a formal apology to “indigenous people.” Others suggested skipping the meal and donating the saved money to carbon-reducing causes.

But my favorite came from NPR, the ever “woke” radio network, which gets about 15 percent of its budget from government subsidies.

In its Thanksgiving preview story last week, NPR recognized the fact that the cost of the holiday dinner was up over 20 percent from last year.

Of course, like a good government-grant recipient, NPR ignored the reasons for much of the nose-bleed pricing: excessive government spending. It claimed that the main culprits were supply-chain problems and avian flu.

It then proceeded to air a piece titled: “Inflation won’t win Thanksgiving: Here’s NPR’s plan to help you save on a meal.”

The first menu item to get the yank off the table was the turkey. NPR’s global economic correspondent suggested substituting bacon, with sliced tomatoes standing in for the stuffing. Mashed potatoes would be replaced by lima beans. Butter and margarine could be dispensed with, and their place taken by, yes, baby food. It hasn’t gone up in price nearly as much as other food items. Let the peasants eat mush.

What killjoys! We doubt that very many NPR staffers succumbed to their own advice on Turkey Day. And of course, the Media Research Center noted that “nowhere in this dreary tableau is there any mention that inflation could be associated with the Biden administration or the Democrats for their massive domestic spending.”

I know many Americans who are so angry with the White House’s inflation binge that their most devout wish is that the Biden crew had to eat a heaping portion of crow for Thanksgiving. But that kind of food for thought is never going to be on the menu in this Oval Office.
