NR Is Hiring a Magazine-Layout Designer

National Review is in search of a seasoned magazine-layout designer for its biweekly print magazine. The right candidate will produce the magazine for publication every other week.

Working closely with the art director and the managing editor, the layout designer will be able to set the contents of the magazine into templated InDesign files in a quality and timely manner, oversee those files through various proofreading stages, and guide error-free delivery to the printer.

Skills:

  • Advanced working knowledge of InDesign;
  • Proven magazine-layout ability;
  • Strong working knowledge of Photoshop (or equivalent);
  • Sound editorial skills, including the ability to write captions within NR-style guidelines; select readouts that best support a story; and understand proofreader marks and accurately apply changes to galleys and strings.

The right candidate will be able to lay out a 60-page magazine and meet several signature deadlines through a tight production schedule; will be able to work seamlessly with the publisher, editors, ad reps, and art department through various in-production layout adjustments; will be able to create special sections based on the wishes of the publisher and editor; and will have an advanced understanding of the magazine-production process, from constructing layouts, fitting content, selecting and sizing artwork, placing advertising, and trafficking galleys and strings across editorial from rough to final.
