NRCC Withdraws Support for Sanford a Month Before Election

The National Republican Congressional Committee has announced it will no longer provide financial support to Mark Sanford’s campaign for South Carolina’s first congressional district, despite his victory in the recent Republican primary. Sanford is set to face Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch in the special election next month.

“Mark Sanford has proven he knows what it takes to win elections. At this time, the NRCC will not be engaged in this special election,” an NRCC spokeswoman said.

The NRCC’s decision comes one day after a report that Sanford’s ex-wife, Jenny Sanford, filed a court complaint against the former South Carolina governor and congressman for trespassing at her home in February. This was a further setback to Sanford’s personal image, which suffered following his 2009 disappearance to Argentina and ensuing adultery scandal.
