New York City’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has announced his government-run grocery story plan, to the chagrin of the panelists on today’s The Editors.
“The idea of government-run grocery stores is so insane,” Michael says. “I can’t even believe this is being proposed. It is nuts. They’re going to let this store be robbed because otherwise . . . it’s just gonna be the site of major police incidents.”
Michael is concerned that this bodes ill for the city and warns “that it is heading into a dark period. What happened in the ’70s in New York was not just bad for New York City; it was bad for the country.”
He points out “that we’re returning there after having learned so much in the 1990s and 2000s about efficient, small, energetic government that sticks to what it’s good at: policing and basically keeping order on the streets.”
While some of NYC’s former mayors might have gone too far in some of their policies, Michael admits, in those years, “the city went into a full renaissance and it was great for the country.”
