NYT Turns Up Nose at Cuomo

The editorial board of the New York Times has declined to endorse New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary — and also has declined to endorse his opponent, the poetically named Zephyr Rain Teachout, a professor at Fordham law school associated with the 2004 Howard Dean campaign. The Times argues that it cannot endorse Governor Cuomo because he has broken his main campaign promise, which was to clean up the corruption and self-dealing in Albany; indeed, he seems to have become part of the problem. But the newspaper also declined to endorse Professor Teachout on the grounds that she lacks broad political experience.

Apparently, it has not occurred to the Ophelias who run the New York Times that the process by which one acquires experience in New York state politics is also the process by which one becomes accustomed to its corruption. To paraphrase Harvey Dent: In Albany, you either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become Andrew Cuomo — which apparently takes about six months.
