President Obama acknowledged that he should have identified that one of the main problems facing HealthCare.gov is that the federal government isn’t as well equipped to handle technological matters as the private sector.
“The way the federal government does procurement and does IT is generally not very efficient,” the president said during a Q and A forum at the Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council meeting on Tuesday. “There’s probably no bigger gap between the private sector and the public sector than IT.”
The government pointed to issues facing the departments of defense and veteran affairs as examples of backlogged, antiquated, or inefficient processes within the federal government. Coincidentally, Representative Jim Clyburn (D., S.C.) earlier in the day heralded the VA as an example of government’s ability to successfully operate large and complicated programs.
