During his “press conference” he repeated that his campaign takes no money from lobbyists. Just because a contributor doesn’t lobby or hire a lobbyist doesn’t mean the contributor is without interests before Congress or other parts of the government. Perhaps a contributor supports Obama because, among other things, he has interests in ethanol and Obama supports continuing ethanol subsidies. In such a case, the contributor doesn’t need a lobbyist. Instead, he focuses his time and resources on electing Obama. This entire issue of lobbyists — contributions — “special interests” requires a good deal more attention than I can give it here. But the assumption by some that Obama is running a cleaner campaign because he doesn’t take contributions from lobbyists, or that lobbyists are per se evil, is nonsense.
