If Iraqi leaders cannot come together and compromise, “there’s not going to be a military solution to this problem,” President Obama said.

“We gave Iraq the chance to have an inclusive democracy, to work across sectarian lines, to provide a better future for their children,” the president said in an interview with CNN’s Kate Bolduan. “Unfortunately, what we’ve seen is a breakdown of trust.”

He said that Sunnis feel that they are unable to use the political process to express their grievances. The task for the U.S. now, Obama continued, is to see if Iraqi leaders can rise above their sectarian motivations.

“There’s no amount of American firepower that’s going to be able to hold the country together,” he said.
