President Obama vowed in his speech to the American Legion to take out the Islamic State following its murder of American journalist James Foley, but cautioned that it will be an endeavor will take time.
Offering his prayers for Foley’s family, the president promised that the United States government “will do whatever is necessary” to capture or kill his murderers. He offered a broader strategy of combating the Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria, including aiding Kurdish forces and rallying other allies in the region to help fend off the militia.
“Rooting out a cancer like ISIL will not be easy and will not be quick,” he said at a speech in Charlotte. “But tyrants and murderers before them should recognize that kind of hateful vision is no match for the strength and hopes of people who stand together for the security and dignity and freedom that is the birthright of every human being.”
The president also assured the audience that American troops will not be returning to Iraq, and defend the administration’s decision to withdrawal, calling it “the right thing to do.”
