Obama: Tax and Entitlement Reform This Year

At his first press conference of the year, President Obama focused on defending his budget, and suggested that he would work with Republicans and Democrats on both tax code reform and entitlement reform this year.

“Medicare and Medicaid are huge problems,” Obama said, adding that he was prepared to tackle them with both parties “in a serious way.”

Responding to criticism that his 2012 budget leaves entitlements off the table, Obama responded sharply.

“You guys are pretty impatient. If something doesn’t happen today, then the assumption is it isn’t going to happen,” Obama said. “My goal here is to actually solve the problem. . . . It’s not to get a good headline on the first day.”
