Obamacare Architect: ‘Stupidity of the American Voter’ Made Obamacare Possible

Only the “stupidity of the American voter” made it possible for Democrats to pass Obamacare, according to Jonathan Gruber, an economist who advised President Obama during the drafting of the law.

Gruber said that Obamacare was written in a way to hide the tax increases and mask the fact that it transfers money from healthy people to sick people.

“And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really, really critical for the thing to pass,” he said last year, according to video that the Daily Signal spotlighted today.

Gruber is a great source when you want to know what the Obama team really thinks. For instance, when he was asked if people who enroll in Obamacare through a federal exchange receive subsidies, he said they can’t.

“[I]f you’re a state and you don’t set up an Exchange, that means your citizens don’t get their tax credits,” Gruber said in 2012.

The Obama administration has since claimed the authority to give those tax credits to people in federal exchanges; a lawsuit challenging that decision is pending before the Supreme Court.
