Former United States ambassador to Iraq James Jeffrey warned that the ongoing crisis in the Middle Eastern country poses a serious threat to the U.S. and its allies.

“The most important thing . . . is that this is a national-security emergency for the United States,” said Jeffrey, who served in the diplomatic post under President Obama from 2010 to 2012. He also served as George W. Bush’s deputy national-security adviser.

“It’s a huge terrorist threat, it’s our allies and partners under stress, it’s a possible civil war in the middle of the Middle East, and it’s even an impact on our oil and energy security,” he said on Face the Nation. “We need to act and we need to continue acting very quickly.”
