Occupy’s Tendency Toward Authoritarianism

My piece today is on Occupy Wall Street’s discomfiting tendency toward authoritarianism. Although the group I write about was fairly benign, they were nonetheless a little too comfortable taking the position that, having all the answers, it fell to them to redesign society along their own lines. This is made all the more disconcerting when one bears in mind the violence of the black-clad Occupy protesters in Seattle yesterday, and the five men — four of them Occupiers — who had planned to blow up a bridge in Cleveland, Ohio.
