Official Word on the Voting Rights Act

Here’s the formal statement from the House Republican Leadership on the Voting Rights Act status.

And here’s what the Center for Equal Opportunity is telling reporters:

“It’s good that the House now has the opportunity to take a hard look at this bill, which has so much wrong with it.  The bill encourages racial segregation and gerrymandering in reapportionment, which is bad for all Americans.  It requires that ballots be printed in foreign languages, which makes no sense when all agree that the English language is the common glue that holds our country together.  It treats different parts of the country differently when there is no longer any reason to do so.  Finally, and most fundamentally, it exceeds Congress’s constitutional authority since it no longer has much to do with fighting racial discrimination in voting.”
