Alberto Fernandez, the State Department’s Director of Public Diplomacy for the Near East has apologized for going on al Jezeera and telling its audience that the United States has acted with “arrogance” and “stupidity” in Iraq. This is the subject of my piece today.
According to the New York Times, Fernandez says he “seriously misspoke” — something he claims not to have realized until reviewing the transcript of his remarks. There is no explanation of what he really meant to say when “arrogance” and “stupidity” somehow tripped off his tongue.
