Oil Peak Bleg

I’ve had exchanges with a couple of readers who tell me that all the oil we could ever wish for is right there under North Dakota waiting to be pumped out.

I looked up the reference on Wikipedia, curious to know why, if what these readers were telling me about 200-billion barrels worth of oil reserves is true, it hasn’t been front-page news. The answer seems to be that experts disagree, by orders of magnitude, about (a) how much oil there actually is in the Bakken Formation, and (b) how much we could extract at non-astronomical cost.

Is there any real expertise on this out there in NRO readerland? I don’t want wishful thinking, I want informed expertise. Thanks in advance.
