On Respect for Marriage Act, Believers Will Be Fine

I suppose I agree with Senator Lee and my colleagues that the Respect for Marriage Act contains legally meaningless vows of “respect” for religious Americans where rock-solid legal protections should be. But overall, I still think the bill can be appreciated on libertarian grounds of a sort.

For instance, I see nothing in the text of the bill that would restrain Our Lord from continuing to inflict on America fertility rates that are lower than North Korea’s, or allowing in His permissive will a number of annual fentanyl-overdose deaths that will soon eclipse the deaths during the entire Vietnam War. Nothing in the bill prevents God from continuing to withdraw His grace from our moldering institutions. Nor is there anything to dissuade Him of His recent practice of using illiterate barbarians to humiliate our vainglorious leadership class and the world’s most expensively equipped military.

Taking all the available evidence into account, I think believers in God are still coming out ahead. It’s the rest of you who lack adequate protection.

Anyway, since it is Advent, I thought I’d share Handel’s rendering of the words of the Prophet Malachi.
