On the Turntable

I’ve made a habit of telling listeners of The Editors what I’m listening to at any given time — I keep a record player in my home office.

On the last episode I mentioned Tammy Wynette’s album Stand By Your Man, which was recently reissued by Vinyl Me Please, the monthly record-subscription service. I knew all the quips about Wynette’s work. But the songs are really movingly reactionary statements about the upheaval of the 1970s. VMP also put out an edition of John Mayer’s 2006 album Continuum. This is probably my least favorite effort by Mayer, but it’s not without its charms. I’m partial to his turn toward country in Paradise Valley and his effort at ultra-smooth pop in Battle Studies.

Finally, I’ve been spinning All Ashore by the progressive bluegrass outfit Punch Brothers. This 2018 album is composed more like a total symphony than any of their previous concept albums.
