One Man’s Blues

For the past several years, I’ve said that I am reconciled to an American irregularity: Our left-leaning states are called “blue” and our right-leaning ones “red.” This is a reversal of the historical norm. For ages, blue has been the color of conservatism, and red has been the color of socialism, Communism, and other Left strains.

The truth, I guess, is that America is “exceptional” in this, as in other things.

I keep saying that I’m reconciled — with the program, on the wagon. But then I fall off. I get unreconciled. It happened again yesterday.

A British publication had this headline: “London can be Blue again.” (Article here.) That means, the British capital can once more be supportive of the Conservative party.

Maybe I’ll be reconciled to the American way (it hurts to write that) by 2025 or so. But red as Right and blue as Left is deeply wrong.

P.S. The title of this post might be taken as a tribute to the late, great B.B. King.

P.P.S. The article I cited begins, “In the midst of a glorious election night for the Conservatives on 7 May, London stubbornly resisted the swing across the rest of the country and went a darker shade of red.” That’s what I’m tawmbout.
