One Memory of Specter . . .

. . . and a positive one, since the dumping on him is plentiful (and, of course, deserved). One day, I was sitting in the Senate gallery. Specter was talking. And George Mitchell, really ticked, said, “But you already said that!” (I can’t remember what the topic was.) Specter replied, coolly — his voice rising not a bit — “Sometimes we indulge in a little repetition in this body.” So true. And beautifully said. Occasionally, when someone says to me, “But you said that already,” I’ll tell that story, with its ending: “Sometimes we indulge in a little repetition in this body.” Specter had strengths, as WFB knew when he invited the senator to debate with him: I mean, on his side, in a televised team debate.

Anyway — Go Toomey.

At 88, Clint Eastwood seldom appears on screen anymore and last acted in a movie in 2012’s mediocre Trouble with the Curve. So the final images of The Mule may be the last we see of him at the movies. If so, what an exit: understated perfection, with a playful hint of subverting his screen image. The Mule is ... Read More
