John offers good clarification on the infamous social-issues “truce” from Mitch Daniels. He writes, “Daniels’s idea of what a ‘truce’ meant in practice was always somewhat hazy.”
I’d just add that one thing it didn’t mean was going soft on pro-life issues. Daniels signed a bill to defund Planned Parenthood as governor of Indiana in 2011, after he made the “truce” comment in 2010. The legislation was supported by social conservatives across the board (who praised Daniels’s pro-life record as governor), and they urged Daniels to sign it. As Wesley Smith noted for NR at the time, Indiana was the first state in the country to defund Planned Parenthood — yet another solid conservative accomplishment for Daniels as governor.
