Only in New York: Taxing a Cut . . . of Your Morning Bagel

The New York Post reports that tax authorities in the Empire State have begun enforcing a nine-cent tax that apparently applies when the guy at the deli cuts your bagel. A sliced bagel, you see, is “prepared food” subject to the state’s 8.875 percent tax. The tax is not imposed on unsliced bagels . . . unless you eat them in the deli.

Not kidding. Albany has started going after merchants who fail to collect.
