Derb: People in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are “Yoopers,” not “Oopers.” The name comes from the abbreviation U.P. — i.e., the “you-pee.” And as a native of the state–and the proud descendant of both Yoopers and Trolls–I consider myself a Michigander. Or better yet, a Wolverine.
