Oregon Has the Second Highest Rate of Suicide

Oregon was the first jurisdiction in the world to formally legalize assisted suicide. It also has the second-highest suicide rate in the country. The Central Oregon Medical Society has noticed.

According to the most recent data from the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Oregon has the 2nd highest suicide rate in the country (chart below) and it is the second leading cause of death among Oregonians aged 10 to 24.

Note that the more 800 legal assisted suicides in Oregon since 1997 are not included in these statistics, which would increase the state’s rate even higher.

Also note that the OMA article discusses restricting the availability of guns — but is silent about doctors expressing opposition for assisted suicide in the state. Talk about missing the forest for the trees!
