New Inductees Named to Yorktown Hall of Fame

The creator of a popular TV sitcom and the CEO of a company everybody knows will be among the inductees May 23 to the Yorktown High School Hall of Fame.

Seven new names will join a list of a dozen inducted in 2004 into the hall of fame, which is a project sponsored by the high school, its PTA and the Alumni and Friends of Yorktown High School Inc.

“There are thousands of Yorktown graduates who are successes in their fields,” said Charlie Clark, deputy chairman of the project. “We wanted to create an array that is meaningful to current students as they pass by plaques in the hallway.”

The ceremony is slated for 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The community is invited; many of the honorees are expected to attend.

Among those to be honored:

* Heather McHugh (Class of 1965), an award-winning poet, essayist and translator.

* Daniel Blumenthal (Class of 1970), a soloist, concert musician and chamber artist who has released 80 albums.

* Elisa Carbone (Class of 1971), an award-winning children’s book author whose fiction uses historical and social themes.

* Eric Schmidt (Class of 1972), chairman and CEO of Google.

* C. Tyler Mathisen (Class of 1972), managing editor of the CNBC Business News and host of “High Net Worth.”

* Rich Lowry (Class of 1986), editor of National Review, pundit and syndicated columnist.

* Greg Garcia (Class of 1988), a television writer-producer and creator of the NBC comedy “My Name Is Earl.”

“We had some tough decisions to make, and there will be more inductees in the future,” said Janet Tramonte, who chaired the panel.

Among those inducted in 2004 were astronaut David Brown (Class of 1974), television journalist Katie Couric (1975), swimmer Tom Dolan (1993) and the late U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone (1963).
