FBI director Robert Mueller defended the National Security Agency’s surveillance operations by arguing that, had they been in place in 2001, they could have prevented the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

“I think there’s a good chance that we would have prevented a part of 9/11,” Mueller told CNN on Thursday. He said such a large-scale operation would have likely been detected by the agency.

When asked if the “mass collection of data” would have made the difference, Mueller skirted the question and instead credited “the various programs that have been put in place since then.”
