You know, Bill Buckley’s life was jam-packed. Overdrive was his acclaimed 1981 “Personal Documentary” of a week in the life of NR’s whirlwind editor. We have 21 copies that once lived in Bill’s old office, but some were kept here, others wound up there. In the collective, they are a tad un-pristine, if you will, but all of them are very solid and decent copies. And since they are the paperback (published in 1983), they come with an “Introductory Epilogue” in which Bill takes on the critics of Overdrive’s first edition. All in all, it is a terrific read, and over 300 pages of WFB in his essence, a man firing on all cylinders, multitasking, advancing the movement darn-near singlehandedly. And then we have 16 copies of the 1987 paperback edition of Odyssey of a Friend: Whittaker Chambers’ Letters to William F. Buckley, Jr., 1954–1961. Like Overdrive, these copies were Bill’s own books, and have been regrouped from various parts of the NR offices as we prepare for our move this fall to more efficient offices. Odyssey is an important book — Chambers was without question one of the most important influences (if not the most) on WFB as he was creating NR and launching the conservative movement.
