The Paranoid Left

I hear a lot of this sort of thing. From a reader:

I’m starting to hear a lot of people say–and write–that the left now has

turned or is turning into something that looks a lot like the paranoiac

right of the 1950s. MoveOn and other groups sound and behave more like the

John Birch Society every week.

For several years the cry has been that liberalism needed its own Reagan–a

great communicator who could break through to the ungrateful masses to

explain to them that nanny state liberalism was in their best interest.

What they really need, though, is their own William F. Buckley. Mr. Buckley

and National Review fought a two-front war in the beginning, not only

shouting “Stop” to the left, but “Shut up and sit down” to the crazy

paranoiac Right.

I don’t see a liberal Buckley anywhere on the horizon, though.

Happy Thursday!
