Pass the Kleenex

In today’s Impromptus, I note a common remark from the Chinese government: that some foreign government or person has “hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.” The ChiComs are always talking about the “hurt feelings” of 1.3 billion Chinese.

The latest example came after Mexico’s president Calderón had the audacity to meet the Dalai Lama. Beijing duly complained that the Mexican had “hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.” In my column, I say that the Chinese Communists are “an unusual combination: total brutes, monsters, torturers, and murderers who are the biggest crybabies in the world.”

I further say, “You would think a one-party dictatorship with a gulag wouldn’t be so prissy. They sure aren’t with Falun Gong practitioners and other inmates of that gulag.”

My colleague Patrick Brennan sends me to this page, where we find a list of countries that China has accused of hurting the feelings of the Chinese people. There is even a map, showing which countries are the hurters. Patrick comments, “Who knew that Iceland could hurt anyone’s feelings? Aren’t they a little small to be a bully?”

Iceland: sparsely populated, icy, broke, sweater-making, volcanic, dotted with beautiful girls — and capable of making 1.3 billion Chinese sniffle or sob. Amazing.
