Path Clear for Steve King Run In Iowa

Iowa congressman Tom Latham, widely believed to be the only state Republican besides his fellow Republican House member Steve King to be seriously considering making a Senate bid, announced in a letter today that he won’t run:

[O]nly 56 days ago I took an oath to “faithfully discharge the duties” of an office with which the people of Iowa’s Third Congressional District entrusted to me.  I cannot in good conscience launch a two-year statewide campaign that will detract from the commitment I made to the people who elected me, at a time when our nation desperately needs less campaigning and more leadership.

King has already been singled out by Karl Rove’s Conservative Victory Project as a GOP candidate who could possibly derail his general election chances with a verbal faux pas.
