Continuing his opposition to American intervention in Syria, Senator Rand Paul warned that there was insufficient evidence that Bashar Assad deployed chemical weapons.

He questioned why the Syrian president would have used the weapons when he was fully aware of the response it would trigger from the international community, and examined an alternative explanation.

“Does it benefit Assad to have used chemical weapons? Absolutely not — that’s incurred the wrath of the world,” Paul said on Fox News last night. “It seems to be to the benefit of the rebels.”

“The rebels have every incentive to have used chemical weapons,” he added.

Paul said he has received “no evidence” indicating whether it was Assad or the rebel forces that launched the chemical attack. “I’d like to see the evidence before we go off half-cocked into a war,” he said.
