Peace and Diversity

The New York Times today features a story about small schools as a possible remedy to the problems of public education. The story focuses on “Peace and Diversity Academy,” a new small public school founded with money from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. One condition of the funding from the Gates Foundation is that the new small schools have to have a close relationship with a community or cultural organization. No doubt Peace and Diversity School is affiliated with The themes of these small schools are supposed to keep students interested. I know how much our public schools care about not imposing political agendas on students–or at least with presenting prospective students with a wide range of options. So I expect the Gates Foundation and New York City will shortly establish a “National Defense and Individual Merit School” (affiliated with the Manhattan Institute, of course).
