This morning, Nancy Pelosi vigorously defended the president’s promise that Americans can keep their existing health-care plans under the Affordable Care Act, despite the fact that the president himself has apologized for the fact that it hasn’t quite been true. She called the president’s apology “gracious,” but still claimed that the ACA isn’t causing people’s policies to be canceled.
Pelosi’s tortuous defense of the promise relied heavily on the point that plans that existed before 2010 technically don’t have to meet some of the ACA’s standards — but, of course, this caveat wasn’t included in the president’s promise, and was made largely irrelevant when the Obama administration wrote the grandfathering rules so tightly that insurance companies essentially can’t keep grandfathered plans, either.
Asked about the president’s admission that his promise hasn’t been enforced, Pelosi said:
He is gracious and he is taking responsibility, but that doesn’t mean that there was anything in the law that said if you like what you had before 2010 you couldn’t keep it. . . . He’s taking responsibility for the big picture.
Though 39 House Democrats voted Friday to delay the enforcement of Obamacare’s minimum-coverage requirements, Pelosi argued that a similar number had voted for other delays in the law, and that Democrats still “stand tall in support” of it.
